I've noticed there's some confusion about what "persistence" means in MMOs (ably addressed by Raph and others).
Still, for my 2 bits, I like to reference Newton's Laws of Motion to explain what persistence means. Stuff is what it is until something happens.

If that's the case, then what do you call stuff that is what it is, and stays that way even if something happens? That seems like persistence taken to a fault.
Well, if you effect some action and nothing happens, not even visually, then nothing happens and there is no change to persist. This is immutability, not persistence.
If you effect some action and something does happen, but it then reverts back to what it was as if there was no change, then that's a reset.
The change did not persist, the change was reset.
